The quest for the true purpose of life is an eternal one. Very few people actually get to a stage when they say that they’ve realized their purpose of living on this earth; as a human being. But in this fast moving, tech savvy world where 20 somethings have to chose a career as soon as they are out of school, it is not a question which really matters.
I say this from experience (I am just 20 something old, so I might not have as many data points) that no one I have spoken to has given me a convincing answer to this question. And mind you, I don’t ask them about the purpose of my life, but their own. I bet you’ve had this discussion with friends sometimes; doesn’t matter whether it was a sober discussion or not. The answer to this question is like a key to bliss; or perhaps not. Actually depends on how you define bliss. For some people, bliss means having lots of monetary resources, some want fame, others want power. But make me meet just one person, who says he knows what he is doing in life and that is what he really feels his purpose in life is. I don’t think that’s an easy task by any measure.
A lot of people don’t do what they want to do mainly because, it is not as highly rewarding financially, or it requires monetary investment, or a certain level of risk. A lot of people just do something because it pays them well. And they go ahead and buy nice merchandise which they probably don’t need in order to “keep up” with the society. So they’d buy air-conditioners in Bangalore, Audi cars and super smart 4G equipped phones. It feels great doesn’t it? What do you get out of it?
Bangalore is a temperate enough place that one can manage in a ceiling fan even in the hottest months. Buying an air-conditioner there is wastage of resources. You are wasting the power generated in a power deficient nation. In many villages even today there is no power. Have you ever given a thought to that before buying your fancy air-conditioner? A normal car which is more fuel efficient does the same thing as the Audi. It gets you to your workplace and back. But again, buying the Audi is a wastage of resources. You are wasting the fuel of a planet which is consuming fuel faster than it can ever replenish. So why are these products which we actually don’t need so successful?
The companies manufacturing these products know that people are like sheep. If one rich guy goes ahead and buys their product, the others will follow suit. And they use this as a very effective marketing strategy. So have you ever given a thought about people who don’t have a roof over their heads or potable drinking water or food to fill their stomachs? I don’t speak about socialism or Marxism for that matter. I speak about humanity, and the need to utilize resources efficiently. Being the most intelligent species on the planet, makes us accountable for at least that. Our decisions impact not only the human race but the entire 2 million species on the planet.
So before you buy the latest Ipad, ask yourself whether you really need one or not.
